While the last post made me nostalgic for summer vacation, the eve of a new school year has gotten me thinking about the aspects of the school year that I am looking forward to. My goal this year is to work harder on having a positive outlook in the classroom and trying not to take myself too seriously. This is often easier said than done (check back in November), but as of right now that's the plan! So here are just a few things I am looking forward to as I pack up my teacher bag tonight:
1. The kids! I know it sounds corny and cliche but one of the things that I love most about teaching is that every 9 months is a new beginning. And although I love my former students dearly, it's nice to take on new challenges and set my former students free to take on their next adventure.
2. After a fantastic summer of puppy kisses and house projects, a small part (emphasis on small) is looking forward to getting back into a routine. I had my first grad class of the year last week and sitting in one place for four hours almost pushed me over the edge. Definitely need to get over this!
3. As a newer teacher I have constantly felt as though I was trying to play catch-up with my colleagues when it comes to curriculum. This year though, we are getting all new curriculum and I am ready for the challenge. This is the first time that I feel as though I will be on the same page as my colleagues and begin to make the curriculum my own.
4. At the end of the day, one of the best parts about my job is working with my fellow teachers. We laugh, we cry, we prank each other. I am so fortunate to work with such a great group of professionals and they make coming to work easier on tough days.
5. Last year I spent a lot of time simplifying my life. I quit my part-time job (what was I thinking?), I practiced saying "no" and I started doing yoga. All of these things have helped me to focus more on the job at hand (aka my students) and I am hoping that this year I will be able to reap the rewards of these sacrifices.
With that positive mindset, I am off to go enjoy what's left of my summer vacation (all 17 hours of it)! What are you looking forward to as you pack up your bag tonight?
